Enterocyte
Enterocytes are intestinal absorptive cells that line the inner surface of the small and large intestines. One of their main functions is to absorb large amounts of sodium from the lumen (latin meaning opening ie a central space of a vessel such as an artery) in the small intestine so that it can be redistributed throughout the body where and when it is required. Another function that the enterocyte cells carry out, is to absorb the majority of the nutrients in our diet as they pass through the small intestine.
